Sports massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on the body's soft tissues- muscles, tendons and ligaments. It's designed around the needs of anyone who's physically active, whether for work, leisure or sport, and can help reduce pain, improve mobility, enhance performance and prevent injuries.
Its uses a range of techniques and pressures- from light to deep- depending on what the session needs, including:
Effleurage and petrissage
Friction and tapotement
Vibration and compression
Stretching and trigger point therapy
Sports massage isn't just for before or after sport-it can be used as regular maintenance, or around activity:
Maintenance- regular massage between workouts or training that loosens off muscles which have tightened and shortened. This applies just as much to everyday physical stress, from a desk worker carrying tension in their shoulders, to a pub worker lifting barrels and straining their whole body.
Pre-event- warms up and prepares the muscles and joints for activity.
During event- helps maintain performance and prevent fatigue or injury.
Post-event- helps the muscles and joints relax and recover afterwards.

Sports massage work in a few different ways, on the body and the mind:
Boosts circulation- it improves blood flow and lymphatic drainage in the soft tissues, helping clear waste products and deliver oxygen and nutrients. This reduces inflammation and swelling, which can speed up healing and help prevent chronic problems.
Releases tension- it relaxes tight, tense muscles to ease spasms, cramps, and soreness, while increasing your joint's range of motion and flexibility-improving posture and how efficiently you move.
Calms the nervous system- by stimulating the nervous system it can sharpen mental alertness and reduce stress and anxiety.
Sports massage offers a lot for anyone who's physically active. It can:
Reduce pain and discomfort in the body's soft tissues
Improve mobility and function in the muscles and joints
Enhance performance and endurance during activity
Help prevent injuries and complications
Speed up recovery and healing
Support better mental health and wellbeing

Long hours on your feet build tension and stiffness in the back, neck, shoulders and legs. Massage relaxed and loosens these muscles, improving posture and comfort.
Heavy lifting, bending, twisting and repetitive movements can strain the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage helps prevent and treat these.
Hard training and high-intensity competition tire and tax the soft tissue. Massage supports performance and recovery-warming muscles up before activity, cooling them down after, and treating any soreness or injuries along the way.
Sitting all day causes poor circulation and tightness in the lower back, hips, hamstrings, calves and feet. Massage improves blood flow, easing pain and stiffness. It's a great way to undo the effects of a sedentary routine.
